Whizzy Ideas

Privacy

This is a personal blog, and I'd like to keep things simple and honest. Here's what happens to your data when you read it or subscribe.

Reading the blog

The blog is hosted by Bear, which was built to be privacy-friendly. There are no cookies and no adverts. To see roughly how many people read each post, and from which countries, I use two simple visit counters. Bear's own counter doesn't store your IP address: it scrambles it into a code that is thrown away at the end of each day (see Bear's privacy policy). Cloudflare Web Analytics doesn't use cookies or store anything in your browser either, and Cloudflare says it doesn't identify individual visitors.

The newsletter

If you subscribe, I'll email you when I publish something new. That's all it's for.

What I collect. Just your email address. You'll get an email asking you to confirm, so nobody can sign you up without you knowing.

Who stores it. The mailing list is run by Kit, an email newsletter service. Kit is a US company, so your email address is stored in the United States. Kit handles it on my behalf under a data processing agreement that covers UK data protection law, and its privacy policy explains how it looks after the data.

What gets tracked. Kit records whether each email is opened and which links are clicked. This is fairly standard for newsletter services. Kit shows me this for each subscriber as well as in total, but I only use it to see which posts people found interesting.

What I don't do. I won't sell your address, share it with anyone else, or use it for anything other than this newsletter.

Leaving. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, which takes you off the list straight away. If you'd like your address deleted completely, or want to see what I hold about you, email me and I'll sort it out.

Replies and emails to me

If you reply to a newsletter or email hello@whizzyideas.com, your message passes through a forwarding service called ImprovMX to my personal Gmail account, and Google stores it like any other email I receive. I won't share it.

Your rights

UK data protection law gives you the right to see the data I hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to withdraw your consent at any time. Just email hello@whizzyideas.com. If you're not happy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
